Porcelain crowns

Porcelain Crowns Before and After Results

Patients who are not good candidates for fillings, inlays, or onlays (partial crowns) may be well suited to full-coverage porcelain crowns. A complete dental crown is designed to rebuild the part of the tooth that is visible above the gum line: the natural crown. Crowns may be appropriate to:

• Restore a badly decayed tooth 
• Hold together a broken tooth 
• Prevent reinfection following root canal therapy 

They may also cover up a badly stained or poorly shaped tooth or replace an entire tooth. Forms of tooth replacement such as bridges and dental implant-retained teeth also use crowns to restore the visible tooth structure above the gum line. 

The process

Generally, it takes two appointments to rebuild a tooth with a crown. The first visit involves “preparing” the natural tooth and collecting information about the tooth to be treated. The tooth must be reshaped and any diseased tissue removed. Dental impressions or models of the tooth and the surrounding teeth are necessary because this information guides the fabrication of the crown. We send these specifications to our skilled dental lab partners. 

The prepared site is protected with a temporary crown. Once the lab completes your permanent crown, you return to our practice. So, Dr. Shoffet can remove the temporary and check that the permanent crown looks, fits, and feels great. Adjustments may be made before fixing or permanently cementing the crown to the natural tooth.
