At Royal Dental Practice in West Hills Los Angeles, California, we believe that every individual, regardless of age, deserves a “forever smile”! Since our team, led by Dr. Roya Shoffet-Yaghoubian, cares for children, adults, and seniors alike, we intimately understand how oral health needs evolve. We can get ahead of many common problems with the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaws with routine dental services. These services include six-month dental check-ups, complete with professional teeth cleanings and oral exams, and consistent oral cancer screenings.
Among children, dental or tooth decay is the most common chronic condition. When food particles are not brushed or flossed away, they combine with harmful bacteria to produce plaque. Sticky bacterial plaque erodes the teeth. Plaque build-up, or “tartar,” is also very stubborn. In fact, professional teeth cleanings are a “must” to remove tartar. Dr. Shoffet has the expertise and tools to gently and effectively lift stubborn plaque.
Regular exams further pinpoint progressive decay at its earliest stages. Early enamel erosion can be resolved quickly and conservatively. Its effects may even be reversed with measures such as fluoride supplementation to build up the minerals in the teeth or adjustments to oral care and products. We are also happy to discuss preventive products, such as dental sealants. These thin and safe coverings are applied to the back teeth. These teeth account for the vast majority of cavities and decay. Sealants “seal out” the food and other substances that become trapped in hard-to-reach molars’ pitted and grooved surfaces.
We get to know our patients during regular dental visits. We can identify risk factors for conditions such as periodontal or gum disease. Gum disease is more common among adults than children and is said to affect around half of the American adult population (aged 30 and older). You may be at increased risk of developing gum disease due to the presence of other conditions, such as diabetes. Likewise, medications to manage chronic illness can affect saliva production and increase the risk of oral disease. Challenges to getting good nutrition and consistent oral hygiene at home also make you more vulnerable to gingival inflammation and infections.
Here, too, standard professional cleanings and exams may be sufficient to keep your gums healthy. However, individuals at increased risk of poor gum health may benefit from more frequent follow-up visits. Patients with active disease may also stop the condition from progressing and threatening the teeth with a “deep cleaning” procedure called “scaling and root planing.”
