Many patients are challenged in their ability to get the dental services and treatments that they need by circumstances, previous dental experiences, medical conditions, and other factors that stand between them and their healthiest, happiest selves. Fortunately, our dentist, Dr. Roya Shoffet at Royal Dental Practice in West Hills, Los Angeles, California, has a special interest and considerable expertise in overcoming challenges associated with accessing dental care.
Dr. Shoffet is experienced and adept at compassionately caring for the needs of seniors, individuals with limited mobility, patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and those with extreme dental fear or phobia.
Dr. Shoffet knows how to address the above challenges and other barriers and how to work within the special and unique needs of each patient. Furthermore, she offers services like mobile dentistry and other “helpers” to make care more comfortable and accessible to all patients, regardless of health status. These “supports” include sedation dentistry. At this time, patients can benefit from IV sedation or general anesthesia. To ensure utmost safety and comfort, Dr. Shoffet also partners with a qualified anesthesiologist to ensure anesthesia is administered and monitored properly throughout treatment.
IV sedation largely involves delivering a relaxing medication directly into one’s system intravenously (via a needle inserted into a vein). This technique partly allows for precise control over the dosage of the sedative, which can then be adjusted as needed to optimize a patient’s comfort. It may be appropriate for patients with long and complex procedures in addition to the specific populations mentioned above. IV sedation also helps to put individuals who are overly fidgety or with a bad gag reflex at ease. The relaxing effects of the procedure are sustained and do not wear off, even during longer or more complex treatments.
As noted, general anesthesia may be appropriate for some patients. This option puts patients “completely under” and involves enlisting the expertise of a qualified and licensed specialist.
We welcome any questions that you may have about how your (or a family member’s) comfort and safety is supported. In fact, we encourage you to bring your concerns to us. So, we can then tailor treatment options to address those specific fears and barriers.
