The desire to have an attractive, healthy smile is universal. You do not have to be a celebrity, nor do you have to be “independently wealthy” to benefit from the highest quality dentistry services. At Royal Dental Practice, Dr. Roya Shoffet gives all her patients in West Hills and greater Los Angeles, California, the “red carpet” treatment. Everyone enjoys a comfortable and pleasant experience and gets the utmost satisfaction from treatment.
Cavities are common. The Department of Health and Human Services reports nearly half of kids and adolescents aged 3 to 19 years experience tooth decay. Metal-free fillings present a comparatively conservative way of treating cavities, a form of decay. The process of dental decay is progressive. The tooth structure is eroded from the outside inward. A cavity is a hole that forms after the tooth structure has been lost.
Without treatment, more tooth structure can be lost. More extensive dental work is needed to restore the tooth to its health, function, and aesthetic appearance. Fillings are generally dental materials that are “prepared” and shaped to “fill in” the cavity. The filling replaces the tooth material that is lost due to the decay process. With good care, no further treatment is necessary.
Traditionally, dentists used a silver-colored amalgam to make the filling. The amalgam is made from metals, including copper, tin, mercury, and silver. In addition to amalgam, we offer metal-free fillings made from a material called “composite resin.” Dental composites are formulated with resin (plastic) and glass-like particles. Together, these substances help to mimic the properties of natural tooth enamel. These “white” fillings can also be color-matched to the surrounding tooth and its neighboring teeth.
Minimal removal of healthy tooth structure is needed to place the filling due to the technique used with the composite. Dr. Shoffet precisely and skillfully applies the resin in layers to a numbed tooth (so you don’t feel anything). The material is also hardened and secured to the tooth, which has been cleaned out and is now free of damage. Special bonding agents and instruments are used to ensure that the treated tooth is strong and the filling is not going anywhere!
